Human (Variant) Point Buy Guide for D&D 5e

Variant Human is one of the strongest race choices in 5e, and it's not because of any flashy trait — it's the free feat at level 1. In a game where most characters don't get their first feat until level 4, Variant Human starts with one right out of the gate. Combined with two flexible +1 bonuses to any ability scores you choose, the Variant Human can slot into any class and immediately punch above its weight in the first few sessions.

Human (Variant) Lore & Background

Humans in Faerûn and across the multiverse are defined by adaptability. They spread across every climate, every culture, every moral alignment. The Player's Handbook (2014) describes them as ambitious, flexible, and relentlessly inventive. The Variant Human rules in the 2014 PHB represent this adaptability mechanically — instead of uniform +1 bonuses across the board, you can specialize. Whether you're a Paladin of Devotion, a Street-Tough Rogue, or an Arcane Archer Fighter, the Variant Human's ability to frontload a build-defining feat makes it uniquely powerful across virtually every playstyle.

Mechanical Traits

The 2014 Variant Human traits are: two ability scores of your choice each increase by 1, you gain proficiency in one skill of your choice, and you gain one feat of your choice. That's it — clean and powerful. You're also a Medium creature with a 30-foot walking speed, which is the standard for most races. No darkvision, no resistances, no special movement. What you get instead is pure flexibility. The skill proficiency is a nice bonus — toss it on Perception or Stealth to round out your character — but the feat is the headliner.

Ability Score Bonuses

2014 PHB

Two +1 bonuses to any two different ability scores. You choose which scores to boost, making Variant Human one of the most flexible races for point buy planning. A Wizard can take INT+1 and CON+1; a Paladin can go STR+1 and CHA+1; a Rogue can take DEX+1 and WIS+1. The two points spread across two stats is less raw power than a Half-Elf's +2/+1/+1, but the feat more than compensates.

2024 PHB

The 2024 PHB doesn't have a direct 1:1 equivalent to Variant Human. The new species system gives flexible ability score increases through the Background system — all species get +2/+1 to ability scores freely assigned, plus your background gives additional bonuses. In practice, a 2024 Human with the right background can replicate most Variant Human builds, and the Feat option through the 2024 Origin Feat system (from background) fills a similar role. Check with your DM on which rules set you're playing.

Best Class Pairings for Human (Variant)

Fighter point buy build

War Caster, Sentinel, or Polearm Master at level 1 changes the entire Fighter power curve in tier 1 play.

Wizard point buy build

War Caster at level 1 prevents spell concentration breaks that would normally devastate early Wizards.

Paladin point buy build

Sentinel or Shield Master at level 1 makes a Paladin a terrifying tank before they even get Aura of Protection.

Rogue point buy build

Alert or Skulker picks give the Rogue reliable Sneak Attack setup from session 1.

Ranger point buy build

Sharpshooter or Crossbow Expert at level 1 significantly boosts Ranger damage output.

Common Build Mistakes

The biggest mistake with Variant Human is picking a mediocre feat. Lucky, Alert, Sentinel, War Caster, Polearm Master, Shield Master, Sharpshooter, and Crossbow Expert are the high-impact choices for combat-focused builds. Feats like Linguist, Keen Mind, or Skilled waste the primary reason to play Variant Human. Pick feats that change what your character does mechanically, not feats that add flavor. The second mistake is spreading ASIs too thin — if you're putting +1 in two stats that are already decent, you might just end up with 12 and 11 where you needed 14 and 10.

Frequently Asked Questions — Human (Variant)

Is Variant Human the best race in 5e?
It's consistently in the top tier for most builds, particularly those that benefit from early feats. Half-Elf rivals it for spellcasters due to the +2/+1/+1 ASI spread, but Variant Human's feat advantage is hard to beat in tier 1 play.
What feat should a Variant Human Wizard pick?
War Caster is the most popular choice — it lets you maintain concentration on spells when you take damage and cast spells as opportunity attacks. Alert and Lucky are also strong picks.
Can Variant Human work in Adventurers League?
Yes, AL uses the 2014 PHB as its base rule set for legacy characters. Variant Human with a free feat is fully legal in AL play.
Does the +1/+1 ASI have to go to different stats?
Per the 2014 PHB, yes — each +1 goes to a different ability score. You can't stack both +1s into INT for +2.
How does Variant Human work with point buy?
Set your base stats through point buy first (cap at 15 before racial bonuses), then apply the +1/+1. So if you want INT 16, start with 15 and add the +1 from your racial bonus.
