Dragonborn Point Buy Guide for D&D 5e

Dragonborn got a significant upgrade in the 2022 Fizbans's Treasury of Dragons, which made their breath weapon scale with proficiency bonus and added Draconic Resistance, making them more competitive than the 2014 PHB version. The classic PHB Dragonborn has +2 STR and +1 CHA — useful for Paladins, passable for Sorcerers — but the breath weapon was the main draw for most players. With Fizban's, that breath weapon actually hits hard enough to matter at all levels.

Dragonborn Lore & Background

Dragonborn are one of the core races of D&D lore, descended from dragons either through direct draconic ancestry or ancient draconic blessings. In the Forgotten Realms they have their own nation, Tymanther, with a complex relationship with actual dragons. Each Dragonborn traces their lineage to a specific dragon type — chromatic (evil), metallic (good), or gem (neutral in Fizban's). This ancestry determines both their breath weapon damage type and their resistance.

Mechanical Traits

PHB (2014) Dragonborn: +2 STR, +1 CHA, Draconic Ancestry (choose dragon type, determines breath weapon and resistance), Breath Weapon (uses Constitution), and Damage Resistance to the chosen type. The 2021 Mordenkainen's/Fizban's Dragonborn dramatically improved: breath weapon now uses proficiency bonus for scaling, they gain darkvision, and their elemental traits are stronger. At your table, discuss which version to use — Fizban's Dragonborn is notably superior.

Ability Score Bonuses

2014 PHB

+2 STR, +1 CHA from the 2014 PHB. This is the classic 'Paladin stats' combo — STR for attacks, CHA for spells and saves. The +2/+1 spread is less flexible than Half-Elf's +2/+1/+1, which is why Dragonborn often loses the head-to-head comparison for Paladin.

2024 PHB

2024 PHB / Fizban's Dragonborn has flexible ASIs per the new rules, with all the upgraded traits. The draconic features become the key selling point.

Best Class Pairings for Dragonborn

Paladin point buy build

+2 STR and +1 CHA directly covers both primary Paladin stats. Breath weapon gives burst AoE damage in a Smite-adjacent role.

Sorcerer point buy build

+1 CHA and the draconic thematic match for Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer. Breath weapon adds damage variety.

Fighter point buy build

+2 STR is excellent for melee Fighters. Breath weapon gives AoE capability that Fighters normally lack.

Barbarian point buy build

STR+2 works for Barbarians, though Half-Orc's Relentless Endurance often edged out this pick in pure optimization.

Warlock point buy build

Specific to Genie Warlocks or thematic Fathomless builds where the draconic nature adds flavor with some mechanical benefits.

Common Build Mistakes

Playing a Dragonborn and completely forgetting your breath weapon exists. It's a powerful burst action that recharges on a short or long rest (depending on version), and new players frequently forget to use it during difficult fights. Also: don't multiclass into a non-STR/CHA class expecting your racial bonuses to help — they won't.

Frequently Asked Questions — Dragonborn

Is Fizban's Dragonborn better than PHB Dragonborn?
Significantly, yes. Scaling breath weapon, darkvision, and stronger elemental traits make Fizban's Dragonborn competitive with the strongest races. If your DM allows it, use Fizban's.
What breath weapon type should I pick?
Red/Gold (fire) is the most commonly resisted, but the damage is identical across types. Pick based on your campaign's enemies — Cold is weak against undead-heavy campaigns; Lightning is broadly useful.
Is Dragonborn good for Sorcerer?
It's thematically perfect but mechanically only 'decent' for PHB Dragonborn. The +1 CHA instead of +2 falls behind Half-Elf and Tiefling for pure CHA optimization.
Can a Dragonborn Paladin Smite and use breath weapon?
Yes — they're different resources. Smite uses spell slots; breath weapon recharges on short/long rest. A round where you use both is a very powerful turn.
Does Draconic Ancestry determine what color dragon you look like?
Mechanically, yes. Narratively, discuss with your DM — some DMs separate visual appearance from ancestry for creative freedom.
