How XP and Levels Work in D&D 5e
Characters advance by earning experience points (XP) from defeating monsters, completing quests, and reaching campaign milestones. The XP required roughly doubles every two levels in the early game, then increases more gradually at higher levels.
Proficiency bonus — one of the most important numbers on your character sheet — increases at levels 5, 9, 13, and 17. It's added to attack rolls, saving throws you're proficient in, and all skill proficiencies. The proficiency bonus also affects many class features (spell save DC, certain abilities). A higher proficiency bonus makes your point-buy stats go further.
Milestone Leveling vs XP
Many modern D&D campaigns use milestone leveling — characters level up when they reach significant story points rather than accumulating XP. In milestone campaigns, this calculator is less relevant for tracking advancement, but the level table still shows your proficiency bonus and tier progression.
In Adventurers League, XP is the standard advancement method for legacy characters. AL players track XP carefully using the official AL Player's Guide tables, which specify XP awards for each adventure module.
