Best Point Buy Build for Cleric in D&D 5e

Clerics are uniquely flexible — some go full support in the backline, some smash faces in Heavy Armor, and some split the difference with Shillelagh and a shield. Your point buy allocation changes significantly based on your subclass, but WIS is always the anchor stat. This guide covers the core build, the most popular domains, and how to adapt your array to your specific table.

Why These Stats Matter for Cleric

WIS drives everything: your spell save DC, your spell attack modifier, and your Channel Divinity DCs. A Cleric with WIS 16 at level 1 (15 base + racial +1 or +2) has DC 14 saves, which is respectable. By level 5 with WIS 18, you're at DC 16 — the threshold where concentration spell control becomes genuinely oppressive.

For melee Clerics (War Domain, Forge Domain, Tempest Domain): STR 13 minimum to hit threshold for Plate Armor's prereq if you want to start in it. STR 15 is better for reliable attack rolls with a warhammer or longsword.

For backline Clerics (Life Domain, Knowledge Domain, Arcana Domain): STR can drop to 8 safely since you're primarily casting. You rely on Spirit Guardians and Sacred Flame rather than weapon attacks.

CON 14 is mandatory for every Cleric build. Concentration spells (Bless, Spirit Guardians, Hold Person, Banishment) are your most powerful tools, and you'll be in melee range more often than other casters since Clerics naturally wear the heaviest armor available. CON 14 gives you reliable concentration saves at low levels.

DEX matters almost not at all for Clerics who start in Medium or Heavy Armor. With Heavy Armor, DEX doesn't contribute to AC. DEX 10 is fine; DEX 8 is fine if you can get Plate eventually.

Recommended Stat Priority

WISprimary

Spell save DC, spell attack, most domain features

CONsecondary

Concentration saves, HP per level, Constitution saves

STRtertiary

Melee attacks, Heavy Armor requirement (STR 13-15)

DEXdump

Mostly irrelevant in Heavy Armor

INTdump

Not needed for Cleric features

CHAdump

Turn Undead doesn't scale with CHA in 5e

WIS primary. CON strong secondary. STR if melee; DEX if not in Heavy Armor. Dump INT, CHA, and whichever of STR/DEX you don't use.

Sample Builds

Melee War Cleric

STR14+2
DEX8-1
CON14+2
INT8-1
WIS15+2
CHA10+0

War Domain Cleric who hits hard and casts harder. STR 14 for early melee attacks (full-plate at level 1 with DEX 8 is fine since plate ignores DEX). WIS 15 becomes 16+ with racial. CON 14 for concentration. War Priest bonus attack every turn.

Points used: 27/27

Life Cleric Support

STR8-1
DEX14+2
CON14+2
INT10+0
WIS15+2
CHA10+0

Classic support build. No STR investment — you're not hitting things, you're healing them. DEX 14 for AC in Medium Armor (Breastplate = 14+DEX mod capped at 2 = 16 AC). WIS 15 into 17 with racial for DC 15 saves at level 1.

Points used: 27/27

Arcana Cleric Wizard-Lite

STR8-1
DEX14+2
CON14+2
INT12+1
WIS15+2
CHA8-1

Arcana Domain gets Wizard cantrips and spells. INT 12 gives you a +1 to Arcana checks (though spells still use WIS). Useful for Arcana skill checks and flavoring a scholar-of-the-divine build. Not a mechanical requirement.

Points used: 27/27

Best Race Choices for Cleric

Hill Dwarf

WIS +1/CON +2 plus bonus HP per level. Already has Medium Armor proficiency. Poison resistance. Solid choice for a frontline Cleric.

Aasimar

WIS +1/CHA +2 in 2014. Scourge and Radiant Soul aasimar deal reliable bonus radiant damage, synergizing with the Cleric's divine flavor.

Variant Human

Free feat at level 1 — War Caster is exceptional for maintaining concentration during combat. Resilient CON is another option.

Firbolg

WIS +2/STR +1 in 2014. Innate Detect Magic and Disguise Self for free. Hidden Step grants Invisibility as a bonus action — excellent for a Cleric who needs to position without eating an opportunity attack.

Common Point Buy Mistakes for Cleric

Putting WIS too low is the most damaging mistake. WIS 13 at level 1 means DC 13 spell saves — enemy creatures make this 50%+ of the time. Clerics live and die by their save-or-suck spells (Hold Person, Banishment, Blindness/Deafness). WIS 15+ is the floor for a Cleric who wants to matter in combat.

Forgetting that Heavy Armor has STR requirements: Chain Mail requires STR 13, Half Plate and Plate require STR 15. If you're using Heavy Armor and dump STR, you'll be at a speed penalty (-10 ft) until you hit the threshold. This matters at level 1 when 20 ft speed is genuinely crippling.

Starting in Medium Armor "to save STR points" when you actually want Plate long-term is a trap. If your endgame is Plate (AC 18), plan for STR 15 from the start. Alternatively, take the Heavy Armor Master feat to offset the STR dump.

Not taking Bless. This is a reminder, not a point buy issue — but a well-built Cleric with CON 14 and Bless running every encounter dramatically outperforms a slightly better-statted Cleric who doesn't use their first-level spell slots efficiently.

Multiclassing Considerations

Cleric multiclasses typically go INTO Cleric for a level or two, not out of it.

**1-Level Cleric Dips**: The most common is a 1-level Cleric dip for Heavy Armor proficiency (Forge Domain, War Domain) and the spell slot progression. Fighters, Paladins, and Rangers often take Cleric 1 for Armor of Agathys (via War Magic) or Life's Disciple (temp HP).

**Cleric/Paladin**: Both use WIS and CHA respectively. This usually means either high WIS (Cleric primary) or high CHA (Paladin primary), but not both — spreading points between WIS and CHA is a recipe for mediocrity. Better to pick one and optimize.

**Cleric/Druid**: Both use WIS. A 1-level Druid dip gives Wild Shape (useful for scouting), Shillelagh cantrip (WIS-to-hit melee), and access to some druid spells. Very thematic for a nature-themed Cleric.

Subclass-Specific Stat Tweaks

**Life Domain**: Heavy Armor, proficiency. Maximize WIS for Disciple of Life (healing scales with spell level), CON for concentration. STR optional — you're probably staying back.

**War Domain**: STR 14-15 for reliable weapon attacks. War Priest bonus action attack every turn means you're genuinely contributing physically. Consider Great Weapon Master if you're going two-handed.

**Tempest Domain**: WIS primary for Thunderwave DC. STR if melee (Wrath of the Storm requires the attacker to be within 5ft). CON for tanking hits while in armor. The Destructive Wrath Channel Divinity maximizes damage dice to maximum — strong incentive to use offensive spells like Shatter.

**Knowledge Domain**: The knowledge skill monkey. INT investment optional — your skill bonuses come from proficiency + WIS, not INT. WIS primary, DEX if medium armor.

**Forge Domain**: Essentially a War Cleric that gets magical armor (Soul of the Forge gives +1 AC in metal armor). STR for melee, heavy armor, straightforward.

Clerics are one of the most forgiving point buy classes because WIS is the only stat that truly has to be high — and it has predictable breakpoints (15 → racial bonus → 16 or 17 at level 1). Get WIS 15+, CON 14, and the STR or DEX your armor choice demands. The rest is flexible.

Frequently Asked Questions — Cleric Point Buy

Should a Cleric prioritize WIS or CON?
WIS slightly above CON. Your spell DCs matter more than your HP in most scenarios, and CON 14 is usually sufficient for concentration saves at low to mid levels. However, if you're planning a frontline Cleric who'll be in melee constantly, CON 14 at minimum is non-negotiable.
Can a Cleric dump STR?
Yes, if you're wearing Medium Armor or planning to stay at range. No, if you want Heavy Armor early — Chain Mail requires STR 13, Plate requires STR 15. Calculate your armor plan before finalizing STR.
Is Healing Word or Cure Wounds better?
Healing Word almost always. It's a bonus action, which means you can still cast a cantrip or move on the same turn. Cure Wounds requires your action. The only case for Cure Wounds is Mass Cure Wounds (6th level, heals multiple targets).
What's the best low-level spell for a Cleric?
Bless. A first-level concentration spell that adds 1d4 to attack rolls and saving throws for up to 3 creatures, including yourself. This is arguably the most impactful first-level spell in the game for sustained combat.
Does Cleric CHA matter for Turn Undead?
No. Turn Undead in 5e uses your Cleric spell save DC (8 + WIS + proficiency), not Charisma. In older editions, Clerics used CHA for turning — this is a common misconception. You can safely dump CHA.
