Yuan-Ti Pureblood Point Buy Guide for D&D 5e
Yuan-Ti Pureblood from Volo's Guide to Monsters was arguably the strongest race in 5e for a significant period of time, primarily due to Magic Resistance — advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects. Combined with immunity to the poisoned condition and poison resistance, Yuan-Ti is exceptionally durable against magical attacks. The +2 CHA and innate spellcasting round out a strong package for CHA-primary casters.
Yuan-Ti Pureblood Lore & Background
Yuan-Ti are serpent-people who through ritual corruption have merged with the essence of serpents. Purebloods are the least transformed — appearing almost human with only slight serpentine features like slit pupils or a forked tongue. They typically infiltrate humanoid societies as spies and agents of their serpent cults. This spy background makes them natural Rogues, and their magical heritage supports spellcasting classes.
Mechanical Traits
Yuan-Ti Pureblood traits: +2 CHA, +1 INT, darkvision 60 ft, Innate Spellcasting (CHA-based: poison spray cantrip; animal friendship 1/day targeting serpents only; suggestion 1/day at level 3), Magic Resistance (advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects), Poison Immunity (immunity to the poisoned condition and resistance to poison damage).
Ability Score Bonuses
2014 PHB
+2 CHA, +1 INT. The ASI spread is decent but the real story is Magic Resistance — advantage on ALL spell saving throws is among the most powerful defensive traits in the game. Enemies who rely on Hold Person, Charm, Fear, or direct damage spells will find Yuan-Ti characters frustratingly hard to control.
2024 PHB
2024 PHB and Mordenkainen's revised Yuan-Ti to be less powerful — Magic Resistance was notably nerfed. Check which version your DM is using. Original Volo's is significantly stronger.

Best Class Pairings for Yuan-Ti Pureblood
+2 CHA is primary casting stat. Magic Resistance means Yuan-Ti Sorcerers can wade into spell exchanges without fear of enemy counterspells.
+2 CHA powers Eldritch Blast and Pact Magic. Magic Resistance makes the Warlock nearly immune to Counterspell and magical control effects.
+2 CHA and Magic Resistance makes a Bard nearly impossible to silence with magical effects — letting them maintain Concentration better than any other race.
+1 INT for Arcane Trickster, suggestion spell from innate spellcasting for social infiltration, Magic Resistance against enemy spellcasters.
+2 CHA for smite slots and saves. Magic Resistance makes a Paladin even harder to kill.
Common Build Mistakes
Forgetting that suggestion from innate spellcasting is available daily — this is a powerful control spell that CHA-primary characters can use as a social tool even without spell slots. Also: the animal friendship version only works on snakes, which rarely matters in combat.
