Custom Lineage Point Buy Guide for D&D 5e (2024 Rules)

Custom Lineage from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything is Variant Human taken to its logical extreme: +2 to any one ability score (instead of +1/+1), darkvision 60 ft or one skill proficiency, and a feat at level 1. You sacrifice two stat increases for a larger concentration of one stat and you still get the free feat. For any class where your primary stat needs to be as high as possible and you want a build-defining feat at level 1, Custom Lineage competes at the very top.

Custom Lineage (2024 Rules) Lore & Background

Custom Lineage represents the 2021 D&D design direction — a genre-agnostic ancestry system that lets players build exactly the character concept they have in mind without being constrained by racial ability score requirements. It doesn't have traditional lore because it's explicitly a rules framework: you define your character's heritage and appearance, then back it up with whatever traits reflect that origin. Your table might treat it as anything from a half-dragon to a mutant to a blessed mortal.

Mechanical Traits

Custom Lineage (Tasha's Cauldron of Everything): +2 to one ability score of your choice, Small or Medium size, 30 ft speed, darkvision 60 ft OR one skill proficiency, and one feat of your choice. The +2 to a single stat is significant — Variant Human gives +1/+1, but Custom Lineage gives +2 to one stat, letting you reach 17 in a primary stat at level 1 from a 15 base. Combined with the free feat, this is powerful.

Ability Score Bonuses

2014 PHB

+2 to any one stat vs Variant Human's +1/+1. Mathematically, Custom Lineage is better when you need one stat as high as possible (e.g., a Wizard who wants INT 17 at level 1, or a Paladin who wants STR 17 or CHA 17). If you need two different stats boosted, Variant Human's spread may be better.

2024 PHB

Under 2024 rules, Custom Lineage concepts are partly folded into the standard species/background system. If your DM allows Tasha's rules, Custom Lineage remains a strong option.

Best Class Pairings for Custom Lineage (2024 Rules)

Wizard point buy build

+2 INT reaches INT 17 at level 1 from a 15 base. War Caster or Telekinetic feat from the free pick. The highest level 1 spell save DC.

Rogue point buy build

+2 DEX with a feat like Skulker or Alert from level 1. Near-perfect Rogue foundation.

Paladin point buy build

+2 STR or CHA to address the MAD gap. A feat like Sentinel or Shield Master at level 1 makes this Paladin terrifying.

Barbarian point buy build

+2 STR reaches STR 17 with 15 base. Sentinel or Polearm Master at level 1.

Sorcerer point buy build

+2 CHA reaches CHA 17 at level 1. Metamagic Adept or Telekinetic as the free feat.

Common Build Mistakes

Choosing a suboptimal feat. The whole point of Custom Lineage is the free feat plus concentrated stat boost — a weak feat wastes the racial pick. Focus on combat-relevant feats that change what your character can do mechanically.
